Forklift Operation: So Simple, Yet, So Important

by Tiffani Finco

Most all of the businesses that produce a product has to have a way to store them in a convenient way. They will have many of the most modern conveyor belt systems and long rows of shelves. The one thing they still need is an appropriate forklift operation department. They can not pick up large loads without them.

Many of the forklifts used are the stand up type electric models. These are very easy to get in and around the stacks and shelving that are the warehouse of today. The short wheel base is countered by the extenders that are located under the forks to give the stability that is needed. The electric models do not have the power that a gasoline or propane model will, however, they are one of the most popular.

The older style gas powered sit down type fork truck, as many of these are called, are not in as wide spread use. This is due to the gas fumes and the enclosed areas. These are used outside and in the very well vented newer warehouses and those that do not have other hazardous gases. The sit down models are still considered as being the best by many old timers.

There are a large number of different sizes and configurations of fork lifts, ensuring a model for any type of load. The ones that have side lifts are helpful in very narrow aisles. The lifts that have long forks will work perfectly for those long rolls of material such as carpets and pipes. Drums of liquid can be picked up and dumped without hands with some of the more complicated attachments.

Training is required for all operators of fork lifts. OSHA, (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) in the United States, has mandated certain training to ensure the safest possible operation. Many other countries will have regulations for their operation as well. The training has several parts and all are important for the certification process.

The classroom training is several discussions on such things a pivot points and Center of Gravity information. How to approach a load is discussed as well as videos showing all operations performed by experts. Safety is addressed as a major portion of this as well as the importance of maintenance records. Rules of the road are gone over and re-enforced in the second section of training.

The operational portion of this training will take all of the theory and put it into practice. The checklist is gone over and performed with the student. The actual lifting and moving of a controlled set of loads is undertaken to demonstrate the necessity of proper clearances and speed control. The proper way to approach loads and docking systems are dealt with. Individual procedures for the loading and unloading of several different shelving types are demonstrated and participated in.

When looking at forklift operation principles, it is necessary to be able to provide not only the forklifts that are safe but also the safe training of those operators. The many things that can go wrong in this vital area can be a dangerous obstacle for the completion of many tasks that only forklifts can provide. An appropriate program of forklift management is absolutely needed to prevent any unsafe operation..
