Frigidaire Appliances - How This American Company Got Its Name
You have heard of people referring to their facial tissues as Kleenex or their copy machine as a Xerox, right? How about when they refer to their refrigerator as a "Frigidaire?" This happens when companies do an excellent job branding their products. The company Frigidaire has been around just shy of 100 years and is widely recognized as a company that produces long lasting and super reliable products. Frigidaire can claim that they were the first company to develop and sell the "self-contained" refrigerator that was originally invented by two gentlemen, named Nathaniel B. Whales and Alfred Mellowes. It is beginning to make sense why people refer to their "fridges" as "a Frigidaire."
Some "crooners" have given credence to the brand name Frigidaire by mentioning it in their song lyrics. Check out the 2007 album made by British songwriter/singer, Jarvis Cocker. "From Auschwitz to Ipswich" is the name of Jarvis' song that references this legendary company. An American Singer/Songwriter, who is also a legend and a namesake around the house, also crooned about a "Frigidaire". Ray Charles sang a song called "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town."
Would you happen to know the original name for the Frigidaire company? You might, if you were a little long in the tooth! In 1918, The Guardian Frigerator Company changed its name to.. well, you guessed it! Back when the company started; it originated in Detroit, Michigan. Two years after it started, a guy by the name of William Durant, who founded General Motors, decided to personally invest in the Guardian Frigerator Company. Within a year, the little company changed its name to Frigidaire and GM bought it directly from Billy Durant. It is worth mentioning that GM no longer owns Frigidaire. Frigidaire took on a new owner in 1979. For those of you who want to find out more about History of Frigidaire Appliances, you just need to "left mouse click" on the link.
At this point, perhaps it's time to move away from the past history of Frigidaire and more into present day.
