If you are considering buying a refrigerator with a chilled water supply, before making your final choice, take a look at the type of filtration system it has. Many brands including Hotpoint, GE and Kenmore use the GE Smartwater MWF filtration system, which is probably the most popular and effective ways of removing the majority of chemicals from your fresh, chilled drinking water. Perhaps you already have a brand picked out that does not use the GE Smartwater MWF system. If that is the case, you may very well be able to get an adapter that would allow you to use thief brand filter in your fridge.

Seeing as all water is pumped through pipes to get to you, it is no wonder that it carries several harmful things. The GE filters will remove 96% of asbestos, lead, chlorine and mercury as well as remove the rust and sediment that often times gets carried through these pipes. Fluoride, a chemical that is actually added to our water supply for our benefit, is kept intact in our drinking water with these filters. We need fluoride for our dental health, so this is a very good thing!

You can count on a fast flow rate with this filter. That isn't something most people concern themselves with when considering a refrigerator water filtration system, but it's a benefit, especially when you have large pans of water to fill when cooking! The GE has a flow rate of .5 gallons a minute, so it will never be an issue with this filter and as the unit is small and compact, it will not take up much space in your fridge.

GE made these filters to last, but you will need to change them periodically to ensure your water stays safe to drink. You can expect you will need to change it 2 x a year or after you have run about 300 gallons of water through it. If you're lucky, you may have a fridge that "tells you" when it's time to change it. Don't be tempted to use old filters for too long as the water can become contaminated by the chemicals which have been removed. You won't need anything special to replace these. Just your bare hands will do the trick. If you can screw a light bulb in, it's the same principal with these filters.

When shopping for replacement filters, it is quickest and easiest to look online and you will see cheaper alternative than the true GE Smartwater MWF replacements, it is personal choice whether you think they are as good, but generally, you get what you pay for and you have no way of knowing how much and what types of chemicals the cheap one would remove, or how long they would last.

If you are like me, and don't like spending close to $4 per gallon of gas (and possibly more, depending on where you live), you may want to consider the time and cost savings you can obtain by purchasing the filters on the Internet. You will be able to shop several stores quickly and a lot more easily than if you were looking locally for them. Another suggestion is that you possibly consider buying "bulk." If you buy a multi-pack, typically the price per each goes down. I won't be offended if you choose to not take my advice. I have placed some advertisers offers on my Website so you can start shopping there. You can also read up on the product and then start looking over deals without even having to leave the site.
