Information About Which Product To Use For Next Oil Change

by Gary Opper

An important part of the regular maintenance schedule for a car is the oil change. Regular and synthetic motor oil both have advantages and disadvantages and excerpts do not always agree on which product is best. To help with the decision making, let us look at a few facts.

The crude oil coming from the ground is refined into regular motor oil. During the refining process the oil is separated and the thinner oil is made into gasoline or engine oil. During processing, not all the impurities can be removed and the small amounts of deposits left lead to sludge build up in the motor. Also, sulfur and hydrocarbons left behind slow down the flow of oil when the engine first starts which prevents proper lubrication of engine components.

Over the past 20 years advances in oil refining has improved the viscosity of conventional oil. This means the modern oil flows better over a wider range of temperatures. The benefits are better fuel efficiency and a reduction of friction on motor parts.

Synthetic oil also starts as crude from the ground. However the refining process is much more technical and complex during the purification and distilling process. The end result is a higher quality oil that has uniform molecules and fewer impurities than regular motor oil.

The purity of the product reduces sludge build up in the engine. In addition, the uniformity of the molecules allow for a smoother flowing product that does not wear at the engine parts. Simply put, there is less stuff to bump and grind against the inside of the engine. Synthetic oil also allows a person to drive up to ten thousand miles before the next oil change, it stands up to extreme weather temperatures, and it gives a boost to horsepower. The disadvantage is that it cost more.

Some experts suggest that it is a better idea to use regular oil to break in an engine as there needs to be some wear on all the components to get it all running smoothly. The breaking in period can be 500 miles while others claim it is 5,000 miles. Which ever level you decide to switch to synthetic, the engine wear will slow down considerably.

Another topic of some disagreement is whether or not it is okay to mix the two. Some experts claim you cannot mix synthetic and regular oil while other experts claim you can. The current thinking is when switching from one to the other, there is a residual amount left in the engine and that is okay. Some people will use regular motor oil during most of the year then switch to synthetic when the temperature drops.

When it is time for an oil change using synthetic will slow down the wear on the engine. It also gives horsepower a boost and can last up to ten thousand miles before needing to be changed. However, regular oil is better for breaking in an engine and for use during warmer months. Do some research of your own because the decision is ultimately up to you.
