Becoming A Bookkeeper

by Clare Westwood

The term 'bookkeeper' is fairly generic and therefore the job role of one bookkeeper can be completely different to the role of another. Often the job role depends on the size of the organisation, business nature and the annual turnover of the company. No matter what the industry most bookkeepers are responsible for handling a firm's financial records.

A bookkeeper literally manages a company's books/ financial records. The job description often includes recording financial transactions, managing accounts receivable and looking at bank statements. Bookkeepers also update balance sheets, profit and loss statements and payroll systems. Another important aspect of a bookkeepers job is to complete tax forms.

The smaller the company the more responsibilities a bookkeeper may have, this is because there are less employees to manage the workload between. At a larger company different employees may be in charge of payroll or accounts payable for example. Due to bookkeepers not having to undertake any advanced training they may have help with certain aspects of the role from a public accountant.

Applicants who have experience3 of using more than one bookkeeping program are likely to be much more desirable to employers. If the applicant has a strong background in maths then the other skills might be easy to pick up.

Some bookkeeping jobs can be fairly monotonous, if the job has been vacant for an extended period of time it might take the new employee quite a while to get the books up to date. This can be very frustrating work as it involves looking back over another person's mistakes.

For someone who is interested in working in accountancy, a good first step might be becoming a bookkeeper first. Often working as an accountant requires a specialist accounting degree, this can be very time consuming and expensive.

If you wish to move into bookkeeping it is a good idea to apply for entry level positions.
