A brief insight into a career as an interior designer

by Cornelius Beeler

Interior design, just like most creative industries, is often fraught with misconceptions. A career as an interior designer is much more than just applying a new lick of paint to the walls and throwing a couple of scatter cushions onto a sofa; it requires many skills to ensure each project is successfully completed.

Most of an interior designer's time isn't spent putting together the new look, but instead brainstorming and researching. The most important attribute a designer needs to have is, quite understandably, natural creativity preferably reinforced with a strong understanding of art and design history. But a close second is the ability to keep up with what's in store and on-trend and the right products will make or break a design.

Having strong communication skills are also very important because they alone will help establish what the client wants. Translating their lifestyle into a liveable space is arguably an art form in itself, as a successful project isn't just about creating a space that looks pretty, but one that also matches the client's lifestyle from a functional perspective.

Other important attributes to have include being intuitive, keeping to strict deadlines and being able to predict future interior design trends, as these will al help plan a successful project. Also, the ability to juggle the client's demands whilst working with other craftsmen and decorators would require strong organisational skills.

The interior design industry has never been so good, and getting the right qualifications (from certificates to degrees) is equally as encouraging. But interior design is of course much more than a piece of paper. Perseverance and passion are imperative to the job, as regular visits to trade shows, show rooms and interior design stores are common occurrences which without the passion, could grow boring. But a career as an interior designer ultimately comes down to vision, and whilst it may develop overtime, the best designers have this naturally inside of them.
