Currency Fluctuations Don't Matter When You Choose a Domestic Manufacturer

by Jessi McCafferty

When a company sends its assembly work offshore, the work is often sent to Asian nations like China. NAFTA has also opened up trade with Mexico, so many firms get their manufacturing done in the south, though the work rates there are much higher than they are overseas. When a company gets its work done in another country, generally the company buys the services in that country's currency, like the Peso for Mexico or the Yuan for China.

Forex itself isn't the problem, but the changing rates of the currency could become one. The Chinese Yuan, noted as CYN, is well-known to be an undervalued currency, thanks to the nation's govt.. They do what's called pegging the CYN against the dollar, so its price generally moves up and down with US currency, although it actually shouldn't.

One Reason Electronic Assembly is Inexpensive Overseas

China is a country famous for its exports. It sends much more products into the world to be sold elsewhere than it buys imports from other places to be sold there. This should make the currency more valuable rather than less. As the CYN is repetitively valued so low against the USD, labor costs, when translated to US currency, are incredibly low.

If the rulers or some business force changed the devaluation, as they could at any time with no caution, the costs incurred by firms to get work done there could shoot up, as could the costs that must be paid to get the products shipped out of the country. If this happened, a company that normally trades US dollars for CYN so as to pay labor costs could find a price that is multiplied far beyond what was anticipated.

Fewer Worries with Domestic Manufacturing

Though China keeps the CYN low so as to remain engaging for companies and those that need cheap labor and goods, many in the world, including Japan and the US, are pushing to have the value of the Yuan corrected. If this should happen, the amazingly cheap labor rates would disappear almost right away, and change the balance sheets of many firms that get their assembly and manufacturing work done offshore.
