Theory X Organizational Structure in the US
In today's American business environment, Theory X is rarely understood to be the best management principle, and the majority of businesses use its opposite, Theory Y. Dr. Douglas was the one who created Theory X, which states workers are usually lazy and instinctively don't want to work and will try to escape their responsibilities whenever they can. This theory implies that employees need close supervision plus a system of reward and punishment to keep them in line.
McGregor's Theory Y is the opposite of Theory X and says that workers aren't lazy and do not shun responsibility. They like to work toward the good of the business if they have the opportunity. We can see that in the United States there are still companies that follow Theory X and closely supervise their workers instead of adhering to Mr. McGregor's principles.
These companies assume that their employees dislike their work and responsibility and that close supervision of work is necessary. The process of selection of an ideal managing theory for an Organization is a difficult task. While the theory by McGregor is believed to be the ideal one by many, Douglas' theory is also not always inappropriate.
It is strictly based on the type of job and the organization that one has to select the most appropriate management theory for it. With the advancements in communication technology of modern world, it is easy for the managers to monitor the work of their subordinates. Even though many companies rely on productive thinking and planning as an administrative technique for the better outcome, close supervision with the use of technology is also exists in the modern economy.
Additionally, for most of the job roles today, educational qualification, job skills, licensure and training are required and the applicants are selected based on these criteria. This ensures that only qualified and interested personnel are on the field for a job role. This makes the McGregor's principle more desirable than the Theory X'. In spite of this fact, some job roles like handling money and personal information need to have close supervision. The extent of supervision varies according to the nature of the job. Surveillance in these types of settings can be done by using cameras or other technologies. The supervisors can be then assigned for more productive works for the improvement of the companies, like marketing and planning for new ideas and opportunities. They can also be utilized for helping the workers by advice and guidance on specific tasks. Exploring the talents of the employees, creating a sense of belonging and building up a strong relationship with them etc. will help the managers to improve the efficacy and the morale. Regular feedback of the employees and exploring more productive ideas from the employees will help the organization in meeting their goals.
