Order, Disorder And A Closet System

by Deborah J. Popa

Order and disorder are defining features of places. In some place lines are obscured or masked by other shapes and textures. Waves, irregular shapes and disconnected things seem to predominate. A closet system can bring order to places like this. Where things are packed away neatly and logically people tend to feel more comfortable and secure.

Compartmentalization and categorization are features of ordered environments. Things are classed and like is matched with like in its own box. What human beings often call intelligence is associated with the tendency to recognize how things belong in categories.

Natural profusion appears disordered. Plants grow or die where seeds are dropped. Thickets, copses and hedges appear to be shaped irregularly by whimsical weather. Biologists who study the profusion of life attempt to discern patterns and categories. Taxonomists study the details of anatomy and discover that there is in fact an intricate order of things that lies beneath the front of profusion. This order in diversity may be what satisfies the mind and soul in so many natural land and sea spaces.

For centuries agriculturalists have contended against the abundance of nature, reducing things to the straight lines that the human mind can cope with. Natural forests are cleared away and replaced with plantations where selected plants are grown in straight lines. Although monoculture is demonstrably bad for the environment and less productive than natural afforestation humanity has yet to marry natural processes with economic productivity.

Primitive human shelters tend to be circular in shape and disordered in general when compared with advanced homes. Within a hut a few valuable items might be poked into the thatch. Other things are scattered around the edges of the hut. Things may be gathered into loose bundles or arranged around the wall. But waste such as chicken heads and empty tins are simply tossed onto a bank of refuse outside the hut.

Affluent and upscale localities are usually distinguished by semblances of order. Roads run straight and the edges are sharply defined. Box shaped houses have triangular pitched roofs. On particular days of the week waste materials are disposed of systematically in separate boxes.

On entry into a contemporary home one may experience something like the intricate order of nature. In each room there will be a thoughtfully designed closet system that accommodates the diverse purpose of things kept there. In the Internet age it is possible to design a storage system that is exactly suitable for the space that it serves. In a real way a contemporary home can emulate nature by achieving an intricate order of varied things to please the eye when a door is opened.
